Malcolm Brown Conservation Consultant - Appointed Heritage Lottery Fund Consultant

Description

Advice to trusts, museums & private clients on the recording, restoration, conservation, management and interpretation of historic vessels.
From a shipping family, he was initially trained as an Engineer within heavy industry. In the subsequent years he worked as a Maintenance Engineer and Consultant within the steel, marine (seagoing) and power industries. He later studied Boatbuilding and Design and went on to become a Yacht Surveyor, with particular expertise in historic vessels. He was also one of the first appointed MCA Code of Compliance Surveyors for craft up to 24m. During that period he oversaw the building of new vessels and the reconstruction of historic vessels. With a growing concern at the way boats and ships were conserved, and to obtain a deeper understanding of conservation and heritage, he obtained a Masters Degree in Industrial Heritage at Birmingham University (Ironbridge). He is a qualified teacher and part-time academic.
A fine craftsman, Malcolm has been sailing, building, repairing and restoring vessels since he was a youngster. He is, at present, reconstructing Helen Smitton (see historic vessel register), a 102 year old RNLI lifeboat, in his workshop Nr. Dale, Pembrokeshire.
