Name:  Madeleine Phillips

DOB:  26 July 1996

Nationality:  British

I would like to obtain a position as crew on a historic ship as I have a keen interest in history and I aim to widen my sailing experience.

I am a prospective archaeology student with an interest in experimental and marine archaeology, and I am looking to take a year out to sail before I begin university.  I find the idea of historic ships being conserved by continuing their use today fascinating, I like the idea that their function may change, but their relevance does not.

I am available from August 2014 onwards.

I have been around boats my entire life, and have spent most summer holidays sailing on my parents’ (Ned and Kate Phillips) yacht, and also racing dinghies.  I have kept a record of the cruising I have done from the time I was old enough to be useful, which mainly consists of Channel crossings to Belgium and Holland, though I have also helped deliver a Farrier F9A, and helped race an Itchen Ferry and a Maldon smack on the east coast.  I have experience in helming, basic navigation, sail trimming, cleaning decks, polishing topsides, varnishing/painting, refilling water tanks, some engine checks, and can tie standard sailing knots.

I completed my PADI Open Water qualification in 2010, and my RYA Level 2 Dinghy Sailing qualification in 2008.

In my GCSEs, I achieved seven A grades, one A*, one B, and one C.  At A-level I study History, Classics, and Biology.  Besides sailing, my hobbies include reading, drawing, and playing guitar a little.  I help out at my local branch of the Young Archaeologists Club at our monthly meetings, and am also a keen member of the Woodcraft Folk.
