Faversham Creek Trust

25 April 2012

If Faversham Creek is to be retained as a traditional maritime waterway and the integrity of Faversham as an historic port preserved, responses to two major planning processes are required.

Swale Borough Council - Core Strategy is a planning framework for all of Swale for decades to come, against which all future planning applications will be assessed.  It incorporates developers intentions for housing, which includes 102 units in the Creek area.

Consultation has started and ends 18 May.  It's called Bearing Fruitsand you can respond in a number of ways:

- copies are available at both the Council Offices & Faversham Library, but cannot be removed.

- written responses can be made by email to: bearingfruits@swale.gov.uk, or by letter to: Spatial Planning Manager, Swale Borough Council, East Street, Sittingbourne, ME10 3HT.  T: 01795 417118

- you can download the document or view it from Swale Borough Council www.swale.gov.uk/bearingfruits.  Please note you will have to login and register if you wish to comment online, so you may prefer to email your comments to the email address shown above.

Sir David Melville has been announced as the Patron of the Trust.  As a new resident in Faversham and a boat owner, with a very strong background in higher education and training.

Faversham Creek Trust has now opened its membership to the public in support of its ambitious and dynamic plans for bringing work and local jobs back to Faversham Creek.

The Trust is fundraising to train young poeple in the skills required to build and repair traditional barges and other wooden craft.  Based on the Creek the new maritime apprenticeship scheme will revitalise one of Faversham's historic industries.

Details of the scheme will be announced soon.  It is hoped that the courses, leading to City & Guilds Level 3, will be approved for student loans and grants.  The Trust also plans to offer bursaries for local young people.  The course will be run by master-shipwright Simon Grillet, who works on barge and traditional boat repair and until recently ran a similar successful apprenticeship scheme at Standard Quay.

The Trust has been formed by people with maritime, regeneration, educational and business backgrounds.
