News 2011

'The Boat Project' is a living archive of British people's stories and lives fashioned into a 30ft sea-faring vessel created from wooden objects that hold personal significance to the poepl and communities that donated them.

The Project is part of 'Artists Taking the Lead', a series of 12 public art commissions across the UK to celebrate the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, and funded by the UK Arts Councils.  The team behind the South East region's venture is Lone Twin, one of Europe's leading performance companies, led by artists Gregg Whelan and Gary Winters.

Lone Twin and the build team - which includes acclaimed sailor and boat builder Mark Covell and international boat designer Simon Rogers - are bringing traditional wooden boat building techniques together with 21st century technology at Thornham Marina on the West Sussex/Hampshire border to construct a yacht capable of reaching speeds in excess of 20 knots.

In May 2012 the completed yacht, which will be named via a public competition, will set sail on its maiden voyage along the south coast of England, as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

After the Olympics and Paralympics, the baot will be handed over to an independent, dedicated trust which will assume the responsibility of using the boat as a permanent space, catalyst and resource for arts and sailing-based activities.

Announcing the maiden voyage...

7 May 2012 will see the launch of the boat from Thornham Marina, Emsworth.  Everybody is invited to what promises to be a remarkable send off for this remarkable vessel.  Free tickets to the launch can be booked online from February 2012.

The maiden voyage will take in the South East coast and beyond, with the boat stopping off at five locations where a bespoke festival of events will mark its arrival, mooring, and departure.

Here's where it will be:

The Launch, Thornham Marina, Emsworth,  Monday 7 May

Brighton, Saturday 19 - Sunday 27 May

Portsmouth, Friday 22 June - Sunday 1 July

Hastings, Friday 6 - Sunday 8 July
