Solent Regional Flagship is awarded the Broad Pennant

9 June 2017

Last Saturday 3rd June, the NHS-UK Solent Regional Flagship of the Year was awarded the broad pennant which it will fly throughout the 2017 season in recognition of its flagship status.  The pennant was received by Peter Draper, owner of the Solent Flagship Caronia, and was formally presented by the NHS-UK Director Hannah Cunliffe as part of a prize-giving ceremony organised by the Old Gaffers Association and held at the Royal Solent Yacht Club.

Caronia was one of 96 traditional vessels to attend the popular Yarmouth Old Gaffers Festival (YOGAFF).  It marked her first port of call on a commemorative cruise back to her historic home port of St Ives, which she has not visited for 84 years.  Peter Draper will be making the voyage single-handed and hopes to call in at ports including Dartmouth, Plymouth, Falmouth and Penzance along the way.

Caronia was built on the beach in 1927 as a St Ives fishing vessel and, after coming out of service, later become a private motor yacht before taking part in the famous evacuation from the beaches at Dunkirk as part of Operational Dynamo in 1940 during the Second World War.  She has been owned by Peter Draper for the last 15 years and lovingly restored by him and his son, Lewis.
